My name is Deah, and I love to travel. I wanted to see the world so I found a travel job: I became an international teacher in 2003. While teaching abroad for nine years, I lived in Haiti, Nicaragua, and Africa. In 2014, my husband and I took a year off work, rented out our house, and traveled all of SE Asia. In summer 2018 we sold our house, and headed off to Alaska and then to the Indian sub-continent.
I started this blog in 2004 to make sure my mom always knew where I was in the world, and I’ve continued it as a way to keep track of where I’ve been, what I did, and how much I loved it. We consider ourselves “flashpackers”. What do I mean by this? It means that we look for ways to cut down on flight, hotel, and activities costs, and when possible, we live on the local economy (or close to it). We prefer bus and train rides to flights, and our hotels can range from $10 to $100 depending on local markets (hello cheap Vietnam, and whoa expensive Iceland!). Dinner for us might be something from the prepared foods at a local supermarket, street food, or an occasional fancy dinner out, like a fabulous tasting menu in Helsinki. I try to give suggestions and examples in my blog so that you and your family can enjoy the traveling lifestyle we love without breaking the bank. If you’re looking for super high-end luxury travel, this is probably not the place to find it.
